wearing hats

Most of us wear many hats in our lives. I bought a new hat a few months ago [to ward off the cold, not to make a fashion statement], and it got me thinking about the subject of hats. My grandfather always wore a cowboy hat.....a straw one when he was working and a nice beaver felt dress hat for other occasions. I still have his dress hat on the hat tree at the farm and doubt that I will ever get rid of it, and out in the country still see working folk wearing their hats as a necessity to protect themselves from the elements, the sun and heat.

I remember when I was a little boy many men wore hats as part of their daily dress. Now it seems there is a bit of a renaissance in wearing hats among the younger, trendier set, and I kind of like that look. There are a few hold outs who think that wearing a hat gives them a measure of superiority or makes them look smarter than they are. Of course there are some that wear hats since they have no hair, and in the wintertime the hat becomes a necessity explaining why I just bought one my self. The term "wearing many hats" is a metaphor for serving in many roles and having many responsibilities.

I certainly wear many hats in my life as do we all.  Just need to make sure we wear them well.
