April 30th is a very special day for two reasons. First it is the birthday of my grandmother, Anna Elizabeth Moore, aka Mamaw. She was one of the strongest, most supportive, loving and special people who have ever lived, and although gone from us since 1988, a constant presence in her children's and grandchildren's lives. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think of her and miss her terribly.
Today is also the day, 21 years ago, when my parents and I bought Sycamore Farm in New Ulm, Texas. It is absolutely the best thing we have ever done, for it has provided a lifetime of special memories of holidays, Aggie football weekends, yardwork, remodeling and just hanging out with family and friends. It is a place of peace, escape, fellowship and fun.
And there is a connection between Mamaw and the farm, believe it or not. The previous owners were the Martins, who hail from the Houston Heights, went to Reagan High with my Mom, taught Mamaw Sunday school, and sang at her funeral. They had also hosted Mamaw and her friends out at the farm during Bluebonnet season. We knew none of this when we saw the small ad in the Houston Chronicle and put an offer on the property. Coincidence? Hardly. Meant to be? Absolutely.
April 30th is a blessed day.
