Today I celebrate Independence day.....two Independence Days in fact. It is the 175th anniversary of the birth of the Republic of Texas. One of my ancestors, Dr George Washington Robinson, fought in the battle of San Jacinto and helped defeat Santa Anna and the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto. There have been Robinson's in Texas since there was a Texas, and in addition to giving the land for one of the first Methodist churches in the state, we have also contributed in many and varied ways to the progress and success that is this great land. So on this sacred day, its important to remember all of the sacrifices and gifts that we have been given by all of those who founded the great state of Texas, and to celebrate all of the blessings that we have being fortunate enough to live, work and love in Texas, USA!
Its also my personal Independence Day, where I celebrate the freedom from those who tried to hard to break my spirit and career. One year ago I was filled with anger, fear, hope, excitement and fatigue. One year later I have embarked on a new adventure, met many new and wonderful people, and really learned who my friends and loved ones are.....and most assuredly aren't. I have been enlightened in ways I didn't know possible and have grown so much as well. I have moved on so quickly and far, that I cannot begin to count the blessings that I have been given. So I face my second year of Independence with a large dose of humility and great anticipation of the new opportunities presented me. We often don't realize why we are given the challenges and obstacles in life that sometimes seem to overwhelm us, and also why there are people that are so motivated by hate and fear to seemingly destroy our spirit. But I can tell you that you can overcome all of these obstacles, through growth and the support of those who truly care and appreciate you for who you are and what you have to offer, and end up in a much better place with much better people surrounding you!
So Happy Independence Days to Texas and to me!
