The President of Texas A and M

I am very tempted to write about my overall disappointment with the state of things in the Athletic Department at Aggieland, but I will save that for later. My concern right now is the drama playing out at A and M regarding the Presidency of the University. While I love our traditions and our rich history, I also realize as do many other enlightened alums that we need to continue to move forward and claim our rightful place as a preeminent academic and research institution, not backslide to that comfortable place that at the very best could be described as an anachronism in today's context. I believe it is too late to avoid the embarassment and acrimony that the entire incident with Dr Murano represents, but it is not to late to get things back on track with alacrity. And whether she was the right fit at this point is immaterial, its a matter of exiting the relationship with grace and getting focused on the future, not the past.

But that is going to take some serious leadership and independence. Leadership to do what is in the best interest of the whole of the University, and independence from narrow minded power brokers. I know these are harsh words, but I and many others are very angry at the folks who would put this University that we so love and that has been such an integral part of our lives at risk for personal gain and self-serving agendas. This just reinforces the stereotypes that our detractors so love to promulgate, and sets us back years if not decades in our efforts to be taken seriously as one of the nations elite Universities.
